ScientificName:
Metasequoia glyptostroboides
Common Name:
Dawn Redwood Once thought extinct, Dawn Redwood is a distinctive-looking deciduous conifer that will become a large tree. Similar in appearance to Bald Cypress, Dawn Redwood has rough orange-red bark with a large root flare at the base. The foliage is needle-like but soft and the green color turns orange to yellow in fall. A fast grower, it likes full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Dawn Redwood makes a large specimen tree and can be planted in wet sites. Because it resembles an evergreen but is deciduous, it has a unique winter appearance.
